San José School | Area attractions | Lodging alternatives

After renting the first floor of this two-story building for twenty-seven years, we bought it in 2001 and remodeled it, inside and out, upstairs and down. We now have fourteen classrooms, a student lounge, a library, a TV room, a computer lounge, a reception area, administrative offices, a large meeting room, two upstairs open-air terraces and a grassed-in back patio. Our San Jose school has lots of Latin American folk art and lots of Costa Rican ceramic work from the Santa Ana area. If you prefer to study Spanish in an urban setting, we think our San Jose school is an excellent option.

Special Features Of Our San Jose Programs
In addition to our academic program, Conversa students can participate in a variety of activities offered by our staff. These activities are optional and involve no additional cost whatsoever to our students. These activities include:
    1. Wednesday Afternoon Lectures. On the first, third and last Wednesday afternoon of each program we offer a Spanish grammar lecture given in English, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    2. Thursday Morning Field Trips. On the first and third Thursday of each cycle, our staff conducts a short field trip (two hours). The first one is to the Gold Museum and to the National Museum. The second one is to an area where Costa Rican handicrafts are sold.
    3. Coffee Breaks. During these morning breaks throughout the program, either bagels, cookies or doughnuts are served to accompany your coffee or tea.
    4. Santa Ana Evening Cook-out. On the second Thursday of each program, there is a trip to our Santa Ana mountainside campus (ten miles west of San Jose) Lunch is provided followed by a grammar lecture from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students are then invited to stay for a Cultural activity and the evening cook-out. Transport is provided back to San Jose at the end of the day.
    5. Saturday Morning Tutorials. These sessions are available during your program. All you need do is tell the Language Coordinator that you wish to participate. An instructor will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. These sessions usually involve clarification of topics dealt with during the week, help with homework assignments or additional conversation practice.
    6. Farewell Lunch. On the last Thursday of each program, there will be a farewell lunch with the Conversa staff at a nearby restaurant.
